Herb and LaNita Roeser Scholarship (2)

Scholarship Essay Required
High School and former scholarship winners eligible

Education advocates, Herb and LaNita Roeser, developed this annual scholarship to invest in students pursuing a teaching career. Mrs. Roeser served 42 years as a teacher, the last 29 years teaching English at Grand Island Senior High. All four of the Roesers' children graduated from Senior High. With the belief that good teachers opened the doors for their children, this scholarship is designed to invest in creating good teachers who are committed to spending their lives creating opportunities for students. The scholarship is intended for students who work hard and need additional support to pursue their education.

Eligibility

  • Must be a graduate of Grand Island Senior High
  • Must demonstrate ability to work hard for desired goals
  • Must major in Education
  • A high school GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Must be actively involved in school activities
  • Must attend college or university in Nebraska or Western Iowa

Essay Question

Write a short statement that answers the following questions (Max 500 words):

  1. Explain your passion for education. Why do you want to become a teacher?
  2. What role do you think education plays in the future of our nation?
  3. What obstacles/challenges have you overcome to graduate? How has this helped you grow?

Selection Procedure

  • Applications will be reviewed by a scholarship selection committee appointed by the Grand Island Public Schools Foundation.

Terms of Payment

  • The scholarship will be paid through the Grand Island Public Schools Foundation to appropriate educational institution per scholarship eligibility defined above. Scholarships larger than $500 will be split into equal semester payments.

Claim Scholarship

  • The student must provide proof of enrollment (class schedule) and student ID number to the Grand Island Public Schools Foundation for scholarship distribution. Proof of enrollment is needed for each semester covered by scholarship terms. Send proof of enrollment to Kari Price via email to kprice@gips.org, in person at GIPS Administration Building (123 South Webb Road) or via mail to PO Box 4904, Grand Island, NE 68802.

Terms of Renewal

  • The student must maintain a post-secondary GPA of 3.0 for second semester payment.

College Students

  • Students who have received this scholarship in the preceding 4 years are eligible to apply again if they still meet the scholarship criteria.
