Jefferson Elementary PTO - Maria Parra Memorial Scholarship
Maria Parra was a bilingual paraprofessional at Jefferson Elementary for over 20 years. She represented the heart and soul of the Jefferson Learning Community. She gave her time, talent, humor and love to the students, families and staff at Jefferson. She worked tirelessly as an active member of the Jefferson Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) for the betterment of all students, including her two sons who attended Jefferson. Maria could always be counted on to help in any capacity needed and did it with a grateful heart and a smile. Maria was truly one-of-a-kind and embodied the Jefferson spirit of family, kindness and selflessness. Maria passed away in December of 2021 after a hard-fought battle with health. Maria’s memory and legacy will live on at Jefferson forever.
The scholarship will be awarded to one graduating senior from the local high schools: Central Catholic High, Grand Island Senior High, Heartland Lutheran High, and Grand Island Northwest High.

Eligibility
- Must be a graduate of any Grand Island High School (Grand Island Senior High, Central Catholic High, Grand Island Northwest High, Heartland Lutheran High)
- Must have attended the majority of their elementary education at Jefferson Elementary
- Must enroll in a school or institution of higher learning

Selection Procedure
- Applications will be reviewed by a scholarship selection committee appointed by the Grand Island Public Schools Foundation.
Terms of Payment
- The scholarship will be paid through the Grand Island Public Schools Foundation to appropriate educational institution per scholarship eligibility defined above. Scholarships larger than $500 will be split into equal semester payments.
Claim Scholarship
- The student must provide proof of enrollment (class schedule) and student ID number to the Grand Island Public Schools Foundation for scholarship distribution. Proof of enrollment is needed for each semester covered by scholarship terms.
