Gaylord “Pete” Peterson Memorial Scholarship
The family of Gaylord ‘Pete’ Peterson has created this annual scholarship for deserving young men and women who are graduates of any Grand Island High School. The scholarship is a one year award. Mr. Peterson was a life-long educator who started teaching at the young age of 16. He earned a Normal Training Certificate from Wayne State College and began his career teaching in rural schools. He later earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education and taught students for six decades. He taught and coached at Walnut Junior High for 34 years. Mr. Peterson left a lasting impact on so many students and colleagues. He was born a teacher and loved investing in students. This scholarship in his memory is intended for students who are pursuing their dreams to become educators and need the additional support to realize their college ambitions.

Eligibility
- Must be a graduate of Grand Island Senior High, Grand Island Northwest, Grand Island Central Catholic or Heartland Lutheran High School
- Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Must major in Education with a preference for students who want to become a secondary science teacher

Selection Procedure
- Applications will be reviewed by a scholarship selection committee appointed by the Grand Island Public Schools Foundation.
Terms of Payment
- The scholarship will be paid through the Grand Island Public Schools Foundation to appropriate educational institution per scholarship eligibility defined above. Scholarships larger than $500 will be split into equal semester payments.
Claim Scholarship
- The student must provide proof of enrollment (class schedule) and student ID number to the Grand Island Public Schools Foundation for scholarship distribution. Proof of enrollment is needed for each semester covered by scholarship terms.
