David and Helen Young Scholarship
High School and former scholarship winners eligible
David Young is a sculptor and teacher. He spent 33 years teaching art at Grand Island Senior High before his retirement in 1991. He has left a tangible footprint on the community of Grand Island with his public art including the bronzes of Grace and Edith Abbott at the Grand Island Public Library, the sculpture of a cougar at Knickrehm Elementary, and the bust of Bud Wolbach at Stuhr Museum. While his art has left a lasting impression, it is the impression that he sculpted from the dreams and hearts of his students that is his legacy. The purple and gold legacy runs deep for David and his wife Helen, who is a 1948 graduate of Grand Island Senior High School. The couple wants to continue this legacy by offering an annual scholarship to a Grand Island Senior High Student who is pursuing a degree in Art Education. This scholarship may be renewable.
