Shoemaker First Graders Strengthen Reading Skills with GIPS Foundation Grant

At Shoemaker Elementary, first graders are gaining confidence and improving their reading skills, thanks to the “Decoding Our Way Through First Grade” grant, funded by the GIPS Foundation. This Classroom Grant provided a collection of decodable books to help early readers strengthen their phonics skills and develop a lasting love for reading.
Teachers at Shoemaker noticed that many first graders were struggling with word reading and fluency. To help them improve, they applied for funding to purchase books that focus on key phonics skills taught in kindergarten and first grade. These books are used in small group lessons, giving students targeted practice with specific reading skills. They also encourage independent reading, helping students reinforce what they’ve learned.
With this structured approach, students move through different levels of books as they master new phonics concepts. Teachers track progress using assessments and adjust instruction to meet each student’s needs. The goal is not just to improve reading fluency, but also to help students see themselves as confident readers.
The impact of this project has exceeded expectations. One teacher shared, “My students are excited to have more options when reading books in the classroom. They are interested in the titles, while the decodable features benefit them in numerous ways. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have students building a stronger foundation and love for reading!”
By making reading more accessible and engaging, the "Decoding Our Way Through First Grade" project is preparing students for future success. Thanks to the GIPS Foundation, Shoemaker first graders aren’t just learning how to read—they’re discovering the joy of reading, one book at a time.
