GIPS Students Gain Valuable Lessons in Digital Citizenship Through GIPS Foundation Grant

by Abigayle Frazier-Hansen

Thanks to a Grand Island Public Schools Foundation Classroom Grant, Grand Island Senior High and Walnut, Barr, and Westridge middle schools recently hosted Bobby Truhe of KSB Law for a thought-provoking presentation on digital citizenship. Truhe used humor, real-life legal cases, and compelling statistics to highlight the responsibilities and risks tied to social media use.

The presentation struck a chord with students, shedding light on how their online actions could have long-lasting consequences. "I didn’t realize that cyberbullying could have serious legal consequences," shared one student. "It made me think about how important it is to be kind online."

Another attendee reflected on the permanence of digital footprints: "What I post online never really goes away, and it could affect my future. Now I think twice before sharing anything."

Teachers also noted the impact of the event. Jen Kramer, an 8th-grade social studies teacher, remarked, "I remember my class having a great conversation about being aware of what they are posting online or what they are saying through text messages. When there is very little context given, things and situations can be blown way out of proportion."

By empowering students with knowledge about the legal and social implications of their online behavior, this grant-funded event underscored the importance of digital responsibility. Initiatives like this ensure that students are better equipped to navigate an increasingly digital world with awareness and accountability.
