GIPS Foundation Extends Helping Hoof to Starr Elementary with "Stallion Sharing Stable" Classroom Grant

By Abigayle Hansen

During the most recent round of Classroom Grants, the GIPS Foundation awarded a grant to Starr Elementary to establish the "Stallion Sharing Stable," a project aimed at providing essential supplies and resources to families in need at Starr Elementary. This grant underscores the Foundation's commitment to fund opportunities for students that are not available through the school district's general budget.

The "Stallion Sharing Stable" initiative sought funding for supplies to establish a closet that will offer basic necessities such as clothing, hygiene products, food items, and school supplies to Starr parents and families. Families will have the opportunity to shop once a month or as needed, ensuring regular access to essential resources throughout the school year.

In August 2023, a survey was sent out to Starr families to gather information on their most pressing needs. This data served as a foundation for determining the items to be supplied in the sharing closet. One of the key metrics for measuring the success of the project lies in improved SEL outcomes. By comparing Panorama scores from fall to spring, the project team aims to gauge the impact on students' social-emotional learning and wellbeing. Additionally, regular surveys will be conducted to gather feedback from families utilizing the sharing closet, with the aim of continuously improving the project into the future.

The "Stallion Sharing Stable" will impact all aspects of Starr students’ lives. From supplying art materials and athletic gear to providing technology accessories, books, food and clothes, the project addresses diverse needs, ensuring support for students and families. Nicki Nesvara, the social worker at Starr Elementary School, recently had a parent share that “knowing we have the Sharing Stable helps her know that Starr is available to help provide for their family when needed.”

The benefits of this sharing closet extend beyond just supplies. Access to essential resources in the Stable will directly impact student attendance, concentration in the classroom, and overall academic success. By alleviating basic needs, the project aims to improve the overall educational experience.

Starr has had many donations from staff, parents and community members in addition to the funds from the Classroom Grant to help stock the shelves. The GIPS Foundation applauds Starr Elementary for their proactive efforts in addressing the needs of their students and families, and looks forward to witnessing the positive impact of this project on the school community.

The GIPS Foundation encourages community members to consider contributing to initiatives like the "Stallion Sharing Stable" by donating to the Classroom Grants program. Your support can make a meaningful difference in the lives of students and families, ensuring that no one is left behind in their pursuit of educational success. Together, let us continue to build a brighter future for all members of the GIPS community.
