Grand Island Senior High bands are more than a "grand band." Every band student has more than $1,000 worth of investment when stepping out onto the parade route, halftime field or the concert stage. From the new marching band uniforms each worth more than $500, to specialized instruments - some with a price tag of more than $10,000 a piece.
Band Director John Jacobs and his son, Bobby Jacobs, lead the 160-member marching band, including a drumline and flag corps; three concert band; and orchestra; two jazz bands; pep bands; and numerous small ensembles and specialty groups.
"Music rounds us out and connects us to the deepest part of who we are," John Jacobs said. "It's part of being human."
Participation in instrumental music develops teamwork, creativity, timing, personal responsibility, improves mental health, builds friendships and creates a strong tie to Grand Island Senior High.
"It exercises the entire mind," John Jacobs said.
