A Legacy of Compassion: Giving Every Student a Voice

Enduring gifts to ensure students have all the resources for success

A Legacy of Compassion: Giving Every Student a Voice

The heart of the Grand Island Public Schools Foundation beats with the belief that every student deserves the chance to thrive. This belief is beautifully embodied by our Compassion Grants, made possible through special endowed funds. When a donor establishes a Compassion Fund, their original gift is invested, creating an annual source of income that supports scholarships or grants for GIPS students—in perpetuity. It's a lasting investment that ensures opportunities for generations to come, reflecting the unique values and wishes of the donor and often honoring a loved one’s enduring legacy.

Em Learned

We are sharing an inspiring story of a Compassion Grant in action, made possible by the Embree “Em” Learned Memorial Fund.

Honoring Em’s Dedication

Em Learned was a tireless advocate for educational opportunities, dedicating 13 years (starting in 1979) as a Paraprofessional within GIPS, primarily in the Early Childhood Program and classrooms for children with Visual Challenges. Her passion was supporting students with disabilities or conditions that impaired their development and learning. The Embree “Em” Learned Memorial Fund continues her remarkable work, awarding grants for services or equipment to meet the needs of students with physical, emotional, or special educational needs.

Alex

Alex’s Breakthrough

At Starr Elementary, second-grader Alex is a vibrant student with a diagnosis of Autism. Like many students, Alex's journey included the challenge of limited verbal communication, a barrier that made it difficult for him to fully participate and express his bright personality. Before receiving his grant-funded communication device, his verbal output was limited, often resulting in short phrases like, "yes, blue." When frustration mounted, his inability to communicate led to challenging behaviors.

Thanks to a Compassion Grant from the Embree "Em" Learned Memorial Fund, Alex received a device that is nothing short of transformative. This technology is his pathway to independence and social connection, empowering him to spontaneously share his thoughts and needs. The change has been profound:

  • Communication: His sentences blossomed from a simple "yes, blue" to a detailed, "I like the color blue, look a blue guy."
  • Behavior: When frustrated, he now communicates, "I want break," replacing previous challenging behaviors.
  • Engagement: His ability to participate and engage in class has dramatically improved, allowing his intelligence to shine through.

This device isn't just equipment; it's a voice. It has allowed Alex to integrate fully into his classroom environment and continue on a positive trajectory of growth and development.

The Immeasurable Impact

Mindy Littlejohn, Speech/Language Pathologist at Starr Elementary, shared just how vital this grant has been:

"Communication is a human right, and the GIPS Foundation helped make that right a reality for one deserving student. This device has unlocked their potential, reduced frustration, and allowed their intelligence and personality to shine through. The impact on their life and our classroom has been immeasurable."

Thank you to the Embree "Em" Learned Memorial Fund for enabling this life-changing impact. Every Compassion Grant reminds us of the power of perpetual generosity and the dedication of our staff in ensuring that every GIPS student has the tools they need to succeed.
